Many who profess to love the music of Van Morrison have no idea that he made a CD called 'Astral Weeks'.
I can understand that. 'Astral Weeks' was released in 1968, to zero fanfare and indifferent sales. Over the years, those who heard it became evangelists for it: Elvis Costello called it "the most adventurous record made in the rock medium," and Steven Van Zandt, of Bruce Springsteen's band, said that "'Astral Weeks' was like a religion to us." Soon enough, it achieved cult status --- one of the most inventive and satisfying CDs ever recorded, known only to the in-crowd.
I'm not a music critic --- I don't even pretend to play one on the Internet --- but it bothers me that junk sells in the zillions while quality sits alone in the corner. In 2004, it seemed to me that a web site about The Best could bring overlooked gems like 'Astral Weeks' to a larger audience. So when I launched HeadButler.com, 'Astral Weeks' was one of my first reviews --- and, soon enough, the CD became the site's poster child, its 25-words-or-less creation myth.
And now it's back.
'
'Astral Weeks Live At the Hollywood Bowl' was recorded in November of 2008 before a predictably rabid audience. Morrison did not attempt to replicate the CD. That would have been impossible, for in concert he makes Dylan seem predictable. He will suddenly change words and tempo, abandon himself to a groove, call an abrupt halt --- and expect the band to read his mind.
I have seen Morrison several times over the years, and each time I walk away blinking at the mystery. He looks like a squat, stout, Irish postman and acts like an ill-tempered dictator. He may not hate the audience; maybe he just likes to show us his back. But when he opens his mouth, none of that matters.
By A Customer
I still remember it. I was driving somewhere in Orlando, late one evening, when the DJ of the local jazz radio station started to play Live at the Grand Opera House in its entirety. When I arrived at my destination I sat in my car, transfixed, and didn't even turn off the engine until I had listened to the very last note of the concert. I had never heard anything like it! The next morning I went out and bought the album and it has remained one of my favorite works of art to this day.
This CD is a work of art, by a man who is one of the most influential and prolific songwriters of all time. I also happen to think that this CD showcases Van at the zenith of his brilliant career. The Belfast show can be appreciated on so many different levels. The lyrics themselves are a religious experience.
But even if Van Morrison wasn't such an incredible poet/songwriter he would still be producing some of the most entertaining music ever created, simply because he continuously surrounds himself with the most talented musicians and back-up singers available. This CD is a shining testiment to that. The flow of the concert is remarkable, the musicians are all spot on throughout and the back-up singers all have voices that most front men would kill for. This is as close to perfection as I've ever heard.

Van Morrison - Tupelo Honey (1971) [2008 Japan SHM remaster] mp3@320 {1337x}-kawli

Tupelo Honey is the fifth solo album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison. It was released in October 1971 by Warner Bros. Records. Morrison had written all of the songs on the album in Woodstock, New York before his move to Marin County, California, except for "You're My Woman", which he wrote during the recording sessions. Recording began at the beginning of the second quarter of 1971 at the Wally Heider Studios, San Francisco. Morrison moved to the Columbia Studios in May 1971 to complete the album.
The namesake for the album and its title track is a varietal honey produced from the flowers of the tupelo tree found in the Southeastern United States. The album features various musical genres, most prominently country, but also R&B, soul, folk-rock and blue-eyed soul. The lyrics echo the domestic bliss portrayed on the album cover; they largely describe and celebrate the rural surroundings of Woodstock and Morrison's family life with then-wife Janet "Planet" Rigsbee.
Tupelo Honey received most of its success in America; it charted at number 27 on the Billboard charts and in 1977 it was certified gold. It failed to reach any of the European or other world-wide charts. The album yielded two hit singles, the hymn-like title track, as well as the R&B-flavored "Wild Night".
This 2008 Japan SHM remastered edition includes 2 bonus tracks- an alternative take of the single, Wild Night, as well as an unreleased version of Down By The River Side.
Tracklist:
1. Wild Night - 3:33
2. (Straight To Your Heart) Like A Cannonball - 3:41
3. Old Old Woodstock - 4:15
4. Starting A New Life - 2:09
5. You're My Woman - 6:43
6. Tupelo Honey - 6:55
7. I Wanna Roo You (Scottish Derivative) - 3:25
8. When That Evening Sun Goes Down - 3:02
9. Moonshine Whiskey - 6:45
10.Wild Night (Alternative Take) - 5:37
11.Down By The Riverside (Traditional) - 3:54
All compositions by Van Morrison except where noted.

Warner Bros. Records celebrate Van Morrison’s classic 1970 album in 1-CD, 2-CD and 4-CD/1-BD configurations. The latter expanded versions comprehensively explore the album’s sessions via outtakes, alternate takes and previously unheard mixes.
Following one 1967 album for Bert Berns’ Bang Records, Van Morrison made his debut at the famous Burbank label in 1968 with Astral Weeks.
It was a creation like no other, and not even Morrison’s most ardent fan at the time could have predicted its heady blend of rock, jazz, folk and classical styles into one opus juxtaposing the spiritual and the earthbound. But the Irish troubadour couldn’t stay in one musical bagfor too long a period of time. 1970’s Moondance was every bit as light as Astral Weeks was dark, and every bit as accessible as Astral Weeks was esoteric.
In the years since its release, the soulful, jazzy title track of Moondance has become a modern standard, recorded by artists including Michael Bublé and Nancy Wilson and even featuring as the curtain call to Susan Stroman’s Tony Award-winning dance musical Contact. Strangely, “Moondance” wasn’t released as a single until 1977 (!) when it barely eked into the Hot 100, but that’s hardly deterred its consistent radio airplay and frequent use in films and television. “Come Running,” the original selection for a single, did manage to crack the Top 40 while the album itself notched a respectable No. 39 chart placement. “Crazy Love” has also received its share of cover versions over the years while “Into the Mystic” could be Morrison’s ultimate statement. His ode to the power of radio, “Caravan,” is no less powerful, while album opener “And It Stoned Me” is a fan favorite to this day.
These newly-remastered editions mark the first major domestic reissues of Moondance. A 2008 Japanese edition boasted of first-ever remastering for the title, though it wasn’t made available elsewhere. Moondance will be available as a single remastered disc for those simply desiring a sonically upgraded version of the original album, and as a 2-CD set with a second disc containing eleven additional tracks drawn from across the box set’s three bonus discs. (A mono mix of “Crazy Love” is listed among the 2-CD edition’s tracks, and the box set’s lone “Crazy Love” remix isn’t specified as mono or stereo. We hope to find out whether the mono track is exclusive to the 2-CD version.) A 4-CD/1-BD version will add three full discs of bonus tracks to the original album as well as a Blu-ray Audio disc with the original album in 48/24 PCM stereo and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound mixed by Grammy-winning surround guru Elliot Scheiner.
